PRIDA ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Minerva Roman Urrutia

dsc_0346Minerva Roman Urrutia was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico and was primarily raised in New York City.

dsc_0361Professionally, she has had three distinctive careers. As a Clinical Psychologist, she worked with the Department of Mental Health, as well as with the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice. She later branched into government, and became a Congressional District Director for the United States House of Representatives. Years later, in her desire to “give back“ to the community, she returned to University studies and at the age of 57, began teaching Early Childhood Education for 13 years in the University Heights section of the Bronx.

dsc_0368After her retirement two years ago, she began taking art classes at the 92nd Street Y, The bulk of her painting experience has been in watercolor. Recently, she begun to paint in oils. At this time, she is working on a photography-prose book.

Minerva uses her canvases to make viewers aware of pressing societal conditions and needs.
