As a mixed-media artist and jewelry designer, Elsie Deliz-Fonseca likes to reuse and recycle found objects that she incorporates into elaborate pieces. She began her own hand crafted, one-of-a-kind jewelry business called Eliz-‭El‬iz Jewelry Designs in 2001. Since then, she has sold her designs in several Madison Avenue boutiques and at Tres Chix NYC Boutique. Her designs have also been featured in Cara magazine, and will appear in Jewelry Affaire Magazine in the Summer 2016 issue.

Elsie graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and previously attended the High School of Art and Design in New York City. She was first introduced to the world of jewelry when she worked as an accessories buyer for a chain of NYC boutiques.

As an artist, Elsie finds inspiration in flowers as well as the streets of New York, with their mix of people and architecture. The use of color in her work is directly related to the mood of the day when she starts the project or artwork. She begins organically, without a specific design, and experiments with paint, metals and anything that makes her say: “Ah, this looks grea
t when added to this.”

In her jewelry designs, in addition to giving new life to found objects, one of Elsie’s favorite techniques is wire wrapping, especially free style wire wrapping, which consists of letting the wire decide where to go. Stamping and dapping are other techniques that she likes to incorporate in her jewelry. She also adds texture and dimension to her mixed media pieces by using gesso and layers of paint, paper and stencils, as well as pieces of fabric and much more.

Elsie spends her free time crafting, painting and gardening, but her true passions are jewelry-making and mixed-‬media art. For Elsie, creativity has no limits: “If we don’t experiment with different textures, colors and shapes, then we might be missing some wonderful outcome.”

Elsie Deliz-Fonseca on Joining PRIDA

“I joined PRIDA because it is a group founded by Puerto Rican artists, and as a Puerto Rican artist, I wanted to be part of a community that could represent me as a an artist born in Puerto Rico. I went to several meetings before joining the group. When I finally joined, I began to participate in several exhibitions. As a member, I have been able to participate in many art exhibitions and the exposure has been great. I have sold more of my artwork and jewelry because of the exposure I got after joining PRIDA.”
