PRIDA ARTIST OF THE MONTH: George Malave

George Malave was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City. He began studying art while still in his teens and received the Augustus Saint James award for Fine Arts Draftsmanship.

He received a degree in Photography and Painting from State University of New York, Empire State. His photographic work includes essays on Aging, The Myrtle Avenue El, Varet Street Kids, Third Avenue El, Motherhood, The Tourist, Metropolis, World Trade Center: Before, During & After 9/11, The Maddening Crowd and other projects. Four books of Malave’s creative works are currently available: Art, Myth & Dreams, Third Avenue El, The Tourist and Creatures.

He has been awarded a Creative Artist Public Service Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Survey Grant.

Malave has exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York, Museo de Puerto Rico, ICP, Danforth Museum, Snite Museum, El Paso Museum, Bronx Museum, New York Historical Society, Wave Hill Center for Environment Studies, Neikrug Gallery, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Institute of Puerto Rico among many others. Malave’s works are in the Collection of the New York Public Library, Alternative Museum, Museum of the City of New York, and private collections.

George’s recent paintings are from a new series of abstract works inspired by the rhythm and movements of Salsa dancing.
