Art Exhibition at Taíno Towers

The Second Annual “Aquí está EL BARRIO/The Barrio Is Here” Part I (three-dimensional work only) PRIDA Group Art Exhibition at Taíno Towers (August 1 to 14) *Note: Part II featuring the visual arts will be exhibited in September 2015. PRIDA (Puerto Rican Institute for the Development of the Arts) is a collective of artists whose main missions are to support Puerto Rican culture and to advocate for Puerto Rican artists.  PRIDA is announcing a special, limited group art exhibition to take place from August 1, 2015, to August 14, 2015, at the Stickball Community Gallery at Taíno Towers, 230 East 123rd Street, between Second and Third Avenues in East Harlem. This exhibition will feature three-dimensional work only (sculptures, masks, dolls, and the like). For the second year in a row, PRIDA, with the assistance of the Stickball Community Gallery at Taíno Towers, will host an exhibition that spotlights the work of emerging and established artists representing the Puerto Rican diaspora and community at large.  Because of time limitations, submissions will be considered only from those who receive this direct email invite.

This exhibition is for three-dimensional work that is completed and ready to be displayed in glass cases and/or three-dimensional work that is ready-to-hang only (such as masks).  Sculptural art that is made of clay, wood, metal, paper, glass, and/or stone is eligible for consideration as are handmade jewelry and clothing. All artwork that is accepted for the exhibit MUST BE DISPLAY/HANG READY. There is no fee to apply, but if an artist’s work(s) is/are accepted, artists will earn 70 percent of the advertised price of their work(s) while a fee of 10 percent will be assessed by PRIDA for costs and a commission of 20 percent will be retained by the Stickball Community Gallery.

Exhibition Rules:

1. Artists can submit as many digital images as desired, but no more than three from any one artist will be accepted for exhibition.

2. No work for the display cases can be taller or wider or deeper than twelve inches nor weigh more than ten lbs. Masks for hanging cannot be wider/longer/broader than two feet on any side and must weigh less than two lbs.

3. All work must be original work that represents Puerto Rican culture, politics, history, tradition or the Puerto Rican community at large.

4. Artwork must be ready-to-display and/or ready-to-hang. Ready-to-display means that any necessary frames, easels, stands, ledges or supports MUST be submitted with the final work. Ready-to-hang means that all work for hanging must have its own supported hanging wire system installed and secured on its back.

To APPLY, send an email with all of the details below to prida@cemiunderground.com by Wed, July 22, 2015, 11:59PM.

1. Jpeg or bmp digital images of each work to be considered. Please name the actual image with your artist name, the title of the work, and the price all together. An example would look like this: (HoneyBooboo_Honeycomb_earrings_100.jpg). Another example could look like this: “PapiChulo-Fuego-vejigantemask-350dollars”.

2. Please list the full dimensions of each piece (base, height, width) and weight (only if the weight is substantial—anything less than half a pound does not need to be weighed).

3. Please list the media involved in each piece.

4. Please provide your full name, your artist name, your business address, your website and contact info.

Timeline:

Wednesday, July 22: Deadline for submissions.

Monday, July 27: Artists accepted to the show will be notified.

Wednesday, July 29 and Friday, July 31: 12pm to 5:00pm; Artists will drop off their artwork. 

Saturday, August 1: Opening reception,Time 6:00pm.

Friday, August 14: Last day of exhibition 

Saturday,August 15: Pickup of unsold art; Time 12pm to 5:00pm. 

The gallery is free and open to the public on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm.
